The Viper strikes in delirious Doha

“I hear voices in my head …”

The theme music of WWE superstar Randy Orton is blaring through the speakers as he walks slowly to the wrestling ring on a sweaty, humid night in Doha. Thousands of wrestling fans are on their feet, some are standing on chairs and some are running around the stadium floor trying to get a better glimpse of their hero.

These fans at the open-air Qatar Sports Club Stadium are of all different ages and races.

Many boys and men are wearing their traditional dishdashas and many females are wearing abayas, and of course the brightly coloured wrestling t-shirts are also awash through the crowd.

Orton, who is nicknamed ‘the Viper’, is entering the ring to tackle his current nemesis CM Punk.

But Randy hasn’t always been liked. For many years the fans despised his cold-hearted attitude and ruthless aggression. The 31-year-old would have no problem punting his opponent in the skull so that they were unable to wrestle again for a very long time.

About 18 months ago the mood began to change and the fans started to cheer for him. But Randy’s character had not transformed. So why had these loyal supporters drastically changed their mind?

“What I think happened is I had earned their respect over time by working hard in the ring, being true to my character and not straying away from my character,” he told me.

“My character, the Viper, that whole gimmick, just kind of took a life of its own. They started to enjoy watching me do what I did.”

It also seems to help that Randy has won the WWE’s highest accolades – the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship – a combined total of seven times. As he says:

“People get with that. People like a guy that wins, they like a guy that does what he says he is going to do.”

And Randy does exactly that.

Wrestlemania 27

The match started with an aggressive attack by Orton. He then clotheslined Punk over the top rope and followed with European uppercuts. Punk then played cat & mouse and jammed the ring steps into Orton’s knee. In the ring, Punk scored with a top-rope cross-body block, then pretended to limp around the ring to mock Orton. Orton then ducked a clothesline and landed a fallaway backbreaker. Both men sold the effects as Orton pulled himself up in the corner. Punk then targeted the right knee with multiple offensive attacks as Lawler and Cole continued to trade verbal barbs.

Punk advertised the G2S as he slowly dragged Orton to the middle of the ring. Punk took his time setting up to execute, then Orton slipped out and teased the RKO, but Punk countered with a kick strike that decked Orton for a two count. Punk then slowly made his way up top, balanced himself, readied, and Orton crotched him at the make-or-break moment. The camera zoomed in tight on Punk selling the effects while gasping for air. Orton then climbed up top, stood up there forever balancing himself and playing to the crowd, and then landed a superplex for a two count.

Punk rolled to the floor to recover, then trapped Orton in the corner to ram him knee-first into the ringpost. Punk followed with a figure-four around the ringpost that drew Ric Flair whoos from the crowd. Back in the ring, Punk went to work on the knee some more. They were locked together on the mat selling a struggle for leverage on the mat. Orton then exploded on Punk with clotheslines, followed by a snap powerslam. “Here comes Orton,” Cole noted in a deep voice. Orton smashed Punk with a right hand assault before executing an Angle Slam for a nearfall.

film:‘That’s What I Am’

I have replaced the previous still of Randy from ‘That’s What I Am’ with a high quality version. In case some of you didn’t know, here is what the movie is about:

A coming-of-age story that follows 12-year-old Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a bright student who, like most kids his age, will do anything to avoid conflict for fear of suffering overwhelming ridicule and punishment from his junior high school peers. Everyone’s favorite teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris), pairs Andy with the school’s biggest outcast and social pariah, Stanley, aka “Big G” (Alexander Walters) on a critical term project. Sporting thick orange hair, a head too big for his body and ears too big for his head, “Big G” has been the object of ridicule since grade school. Before long, Andy will learn that there was truly a method behind Mr. Simon’s madness as to why he teamed these two up. As the story unfolds, Mr. Simon finds himself the target of a malicious rumor after Principal Kelner (Amy Madigan) suspends a school bully for brutally beating up a female classmate who he thinks has “cooties.” When Andy watches “Big G” fearlessly confront the school bully, a series of events are triggered, which change the lives of both young men – and their teacher – forever. Much to Andy’s surprise “Big G” is brilliant, kind, tolerant and a decent human being, who has more dignity than anyone Andy has ever encountered.
